The Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) is currently planning to inaugurate the student chapter of the professional body in the Rivers State University (RSU). The plans were unveiled by the National Student Coordinator of the Institute, Dr. Dike Martins after meeting with the ISPON National President to birth the student chapter.
The development was inspired by Mr. Fasusi Olayinka, Special Adviser to the National Student Coordinator and a Staff of Marana Global Services Ltd who also represented the National Coordinator in successful meetings and consultation with the university management in June, 2018.
Mr. Fasusi also disclosed to Marana Global that the target of ISPON is to establish student chapters in all institutions in Nigeria as one of the mandates of the Institute. He further acknowledged the key role played by the former Dean of Students’ Affairs and Founder of RSU Safety Club, Prof. F. B. Sigalo in making the chapter a reality and for consistently demonstrating good safety leadership in the university.
According to Prof. Sigalo, the decision by ISPON to reach out to the school is a commendable one as it will encourage safety consciousness in the student environment.
Dr. Martins stressed that ISPON believes in “catching them young” and integrating the students early into professional safety practice by bridging the gap between the industry and the academic environment. There are many benefits for the students who will take advantage of this development by becoming student members through their respective chapters.
The inauguration promises to be a grand event as it will feature major stakeholders from the industries in workshops and dialogues towards improving health and safety practices in the country. More details will come soon.
